Legal Manager

About the role

The Legal Manager will support SMEC’s South African operations from Johannesburg, providing specialist legal advice to minimise risk and ensure compliance across commercial activities.

Key responsibilities

• Review and advise on terms and conditions of contracts to align with commercial and legal guidelines.
• Lead or assist in contract negotiations with clients, sub‑consultants, contractors and third‑party partners.
• Manage litigation matters, including liaison with external counsel, tender appeal processes, debt collection and resolution of contractual disputes.
• Provide legal input on tender proposals, collaborating with bid managers and other advisors to identify and mitigate risks.
• Guide project managers on contractual obligations and deliver general legal advice.
• Draft legal notices, letters and other commercial documents in line with SMEC standards.
• Maintain MIS updates and ensure compliance with internal policies and controls.
