Safeguarding Advisor, East Africa

About the role

The Regional Safeguarding Advisor (RSA) will support Mercy Corps’ East Africa programmes by providing technical guidance to prevent, detect and respond to safeguarding concerns. Working part‑time (50%), the RSA will collaborate with country teams across Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical guidance on safeguarding policies, including the rollout of Safeguarding Core Standards.
• Support country teams in assessing and mitigating safeguarding risks to children and adults.
• Develop and monitor survivor support mechanisms and response protocols.
• Contribute safeguarding inputs to funding proposals and ensure appropriate resourcing.
• Deliver regular regional updates on safeguarding performance and emerging issues.

Required profile

• Proven experience in safeguarding, child protection or related fields within humanitarian or development contexts.
• Strong understanding of sexual exploitation, abuse prevention, trafficking and child safeguarding standards.
• Ability to work across multiple countries and provide technical assistance to diverse teams.
• Excellent analytical and reporting skills.
