Tunnel Surveyor – Civil Engineering & Tunnelling

About the role

Joseph Gallagher, a leading UK civil engineering and tunnelling subcontractor, is seeking an experienced Tunnel Surveyor to support critical infrastructure projects. You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining survey control throughout primary and secondary tunnel lining works, ensuring high‑precision alignment and data integrity.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out surveys to control position and alignment of primary SCL lining and secondary concrete shutter.
• Manage and transfer tunnel control data between primary and secondary linings using high‑end equipment.
• Prepare documentation, reports and graphical displays for submission and review.
• Install and maintain survey fixings, advancing control throughout tunnel works.
• Generate SCL tunnel profiles with Amberg and produce daily SRG reports.
• Set‑out secondary lining shutters and coordinate with tunnel engineers.
• Conduct wriggle, as‑built surveys and assist with lining scanning.
• Implement data storage, retrieval processes and quality checks.
• Use Starnet least‑squares network adjustment software for control verification.
• Supervise chainpersons, assistant engineers/surveyors and liaise with foremen.
• Maintain a daily site diary covering variations, subcontractor attendance and project discussions.
• Promote and uphold a positive safety culture on site.

Required profile

• Professional land surveying qualification (degree, diploma or equivalent).
• Extensive knowledge of surveying procedures and methods on major civil engineering projects.
• Proven experience in tunnel surveying with a major civil engineering contractor.
• Ability to work independently with high accuracy and meet deadlines.
• Strong attendance, time‑keeping and collaborative teamwork skills.
