Assistant Underwriting Manager – General Insurance

About the role

The Assistant Underwriting Manager will support Old Mutual’s General Insurance underwriting team by assessing, pricing and selecting risks in line with established guidelines and reinsurance programmes. The role ensures high‑quality risk selection, timely service delivery and contributes to product development that meets evolving market demands.

Key responsibilities

• Verify that accepted risks comply with underwriting guidelines and reinsurance coverage.
• Provide technical advice on rating and underwriting of complex risks.
• Support business onboarding, documentation, risk surveys, valuations, policy issuance, certificate management, cancellations and refunds.
• Assist in product review, pricing, quotations and business‑innovation initiatives.
• Respond to daily operational queries to maintain smooth customer experience within defined turnaround times.
• Review and improve underwriting processes, systems and SOPs to address changing business needs.
• Prepare and submit monthly underwriting returns and update compliance risk registers.
• Audit and monitor compliance with guidelines, authority matrices, data completeness and reinsurance rates.
• Review and approve policy schedules and documents, and identify training needs.
• Coach and mentor staff on underwriting standards and product knowledge.
