Associate Professor - General Surgery

About the role

Kenyatta University seeks an experienced academic leader to join its Faculty of Medicine as an Associate Professor in General Surgery. The role involves delivering high‑quality teaching, supervising postgraduate research, and contributing to the university’s research agenda.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in General Surgery and related specialties.
• Supervise at least four postgraduate students, including doctoral candidates.
• Maintain an active research programme with a minimum of six peer‑reviewed publications.
• Apply for research grants individually or as part of a team.
• Participate in academic conferences, seminars, and workshops.
• Ensure compliance with professional registration and licensing requirements.

Required profile

• PhD (or equivalent) in Medicine or Public Health from an accredited university.
• Master’s degree with specialization in Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, or Paediatrics.
• At least three years of university teaching experience at Senior Lecturer level.
• Six cumulative peer‑reviewed publications, with four published after appointment as Senior Lecturer.
• Successful supervision of four postgraduate students, including one doctoral candidate.
• Evidence of grant application activity.
• Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and a valid practising licence.

Required skills

• Expertise in General Surgery and one or more subspecialties (Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery, Paediatrics).
