Cardiothoracic Surgery Specialist

About the role

The Cardiothoracic Surgery Specialist will report to the Head of Department and deliver specialised diagnostic, curative, rehabilitative and preventive cardiothoracic services to patients at Kenyatta National Hospital. The role demands high‑quality clinical care, adherence to professional standards and continuous improvement of patient outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide comprehensive cardiothoracic and vascular surgical care, including pre‑operative assessment and post‑operative follow‑up.
• Perform specialised diagnostic procedures and interpret results to guide treatment plans.
• Deliver curative surgical interventions for complex cardiac and thoracic conditions.
• Manage rehabilitative programmes to support patient recovery and functional restoration.
• Implement preventive health strategies to reduce incidence of cardiothoracic diseases.
• Maintain accurate medical records and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.

Required profile

• Master of Medicine in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery or equivalent recognised by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
• MBChB degree or equivalent recognised by the Council.
• Specialist recognition certificate in Cardiothoracic Surgery.
• Current registration and practising licence with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
• Professional indemnity cover.
• Candidates currently completing MMed and undergoing pre‑registration attachment are also encouraged to apply.
