Consultant – TEEB National Implementation

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a consultant to support the national implementation of the Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity (TEEB) initiative. Working remotely from Nairobi, the consultant will contribute to the “True Value Accounting: Making the Economic Case for Food Systems Transformation in India and Kenya” project funded by the IKEA Foundation.

Key responsibilities

• Communicate TEEBAgriFood evidence and approaches to policy‑makers and decision‑makers, positioning them for mainstreaming in national and sub‑national policy processes.
• Identify practical pathways for integrating TEEBAgriFood findings into government planning, budgeting, public‑investment, programme prioritisation and resource‑allocation decisions.
• Translate policy support options identified by the Project Steering Committee into actionable recommendations through coordination with research partners, policy experts and relevant government stakeholders.
• Engage key stakeholders in Sikkim and Kenya to support the introduction, institutional uptake and implementation of the TEEBAgriFood approach within state policies, programmes and institutional processes.
• Document policy engagement, emerging mainstreaming opportunities, stakeholder consultations and agreed follow‑up actions for project monitoring and reporting.

Required profile

• Relevant academic background in environmental economics, natural‑capital valuation, or related fields.
• Experience working with government agencies, international organisations or NGOs on policy‑oriented environmental projects.
• Proven ability to produce clear, policy‑relevant reports and recommendations.

Required skills

• Strong analytical skills in ecosystem service valuation.
• Excellent written and verbal communication for policy audiences.
• Ability to coordinate multi‑stakeholder processes and produce actionable policy briefs.
