Counsellor – Psychological Support & EAP

About the role

The Counsellor will provide professional psychological support to patients and staff within Aga Khan Hospitals, addressing a range of life‑issues such as trauma, grief, illness and end‑of‑life concerns. The role also supports the Employee Assistance Programme, helping staff manage stress and improve workplace relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Provide psychological support to clients dealing with trauma, grief, end‑of‑life issues, acute and chronic illness, and other mental health challenges.
• Deliver Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) services for hospital staff, helping them manage stress, improve relationships and resolve conflicts to boost productivity.
• Design and conduct training sessions for departmental teams that align with institutional and departmental objectives.

Required profile

• Registered with the Ministry of Health in Kenya and holds a valid practice licence.
• Master’s degree in counselling or clinical psychology (or equivalent undergraduate counselling education plus relevant diploma).
• Additional training in trauma, chronic illness, death and dying is preferred.
• Minimum two years of professional experience, preferably in a medical or hospital setting.
• Strong knowledge of emotional, social and psychological challenges and a non‑partisan approach to religious, cultural and traditional practices.
• High ethical standards, ability to serve as a role model, and a collaborative team attitude.
