Counsellor – Psychological Support

About the role

The Aga Khan Hospitals are seeking a qualified Counsellor to provide professional psychological support to patients, families and staff within the hospital setting in Nairobi. The role involves delivering trauma‑focused counselling, supporting the Employee Assistance Program and contributing to staff development initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide psychological support to clients dealing with trauma, grief, end‑of‑life issues, acute and chronic illness, and other mental health concerns.
• Deliver counselling services as part of the hospital’s Employee Assistance Program, helping staff manage stress, improve relationships and resolve conflicts.
• Design and conduct training activities for departments to meet institutional and departmental goals.

Required profile

• Registered with the Ministry of Health in Kenya with a valid practice licence.
• Master’s degree in counselling or clinical psychology (or equivalent undergraduate counselling education plus a relevant diploma).
• Additional training in trauma, chronic illness, death and dying is desirable.
• Minimum two years of relevant experience, preferably in a medical setting.
• Strong knowledge of emotional, social and psychological challenges and a non‑partisan approach to religious, cultural and traditional practices.
• High ethical standards, ability to serve as a role model and work effectively in a team.
