Librarian – Community Library

About the role

SHOFCO is looking for a motivated Librarian to run the community library in Kawangware, Nairobi. The role supports the organization’s mission to provide education and learning resources in slum areas, ensuring the library is welcoming, well‑stocked and efficiently managed.

Key responsibilities

• Research, select and acquire appropriate library materials.
• Develop and run outreach and special programs for community members.
• Prepare budget reports and manage library finances.
• Open the library on schedule and maintain a safe, learning‑focused environment.
• Catalogue, classify and maintain collections using bar codes and call numbers.
• Assist users, analyse their needs and provide suitable books and resources.
• Enter and regularly update data in the library management system.
• Return items to shelves, repair damaged books and keep the catalogue current.
• Induct new users and provide reference support for resource‑center activities.

Required profile

• Certificate in Library and Information Science.
• Minimum one year of experience delivering library services.
• Record‑management skills are an advantage.
• Ability to manage a library collection and serve diverse users.
• Strong adherence to procedures and willingness to receive feedback.
