Environmental Data Research and Methodology Intern

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a motivated intern to support its Office of Science in advancing environmental data research and methodology. This six‑month, onsite internship in Nairobi will provide hands‑on experience in data analytics, digital tools, and foresight platforms that inform global environmental policy.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in developing guidelines and methodologies for researching emerging environmental issues.
• Conduct literature and data source research on environmental and emerging topics.
• Support the organization, enrichment, and maintenance of the UNEP data database.
• Help compile, assess, and rank evidence for environmental decision‑making.
• Document data processes, analytical workflows, and methodological approaches.
• Prepare technical inputs for reports, presentations, and briefing materials.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or completed a graduate programme (second university degree) or in the final year of a bachelor’s degree.
• Demonstrated interest in United Nations work and commitment to its charter.
• Ability to interact respectfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Basic computer literacy with standard software applications.
