Legal Officer

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Legal Officer to join its Law Division’s Environmental Governance section in Nairobi. The role supports UNEP’s mission to promote environmental rule of law and sustainable development through legal technical assistance and capacity‑building programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Administer and implement legal technical assistance and capacity‑building initiatives under the Montevideo Programme on Environmental Law.
• Support sustainability and circularity programmes, including those related to textile value chains.
• Provide advice and guidance on environmental governance, multilateral environmental agreements and related policy issues.
• Collaborate with UNEP divisions, regional offices and external partners to deliver programme objectives.
• Report to the Deputy Director and the Head of the Section.

Required profile

• Relevant experience in environmental law, governance or related international legal frameworks.
• Familiarity with the Montevideo Programme and multilateral environmental agreements.
• Ability to work in a multinational, intergovernmental environment.
