Convenor of the Ethos (Scrutiny) Group

About the role

The Convenor will lead the Ethos Group, a body responsible for reviewing draft resources—both physical and digital—to ensure they reflect authentic Methodist theology and values. This role supports the creation of new church materials and advises on whether they should be published.

Key responsibilities

• Chair the Ethos Group and coordinate its review activities.
• Scrutinise draft materials for theological consistency and Methodist identity.
• Recommend approval, revision, or rejection of resources.
• Promote diversity within the group’s membership and perspectives.
• Consult with external committees such as the Secretary of Faith and Order Committee and the Conference Office when needed.
• Communicate feedback sensitively to authors and group members.

Required profile

• Ordained or lay member of the Methodist Church in Britain.
• Theological qualification is desirable.
• Familiarity with Methodist strategies and theological background (e.g., “God for All”).
• Knowledge of Methodist procedures and Conference decisions.
• Ability to recognise when further consultation is required.
• Strong commitment to Methodist identity, values, and inclusive mission.

Required skills

What we offer

• Initial fixed‑term appointment of up to three years, with possible extensions.
• Flexible time commitment of approximately 2–8 hours per month, depending on workload.
