Assistant Underwriter

About the role

We are looking for an Assistant Underwriter to support the underwriting team at Old Mutual. The role involves enforcing underwriting controls, ensuring compliance with guidelines, and delivering high‑quality documentation and customer service.

Key responsibilities

• Enforce underwriting controls, including onboarding, certificates, business booking and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, SOPs and AML/PEP policies.
• Capture clean and accurate data and prepare quotations promptly.
• Debit premiums, process policy documents and issue motor certificates and yellow cards within set timelines.
• Review and dispatch notices, prepare management reports and maintain the registry.
• Provide quality customer service, safeguard security documents and scan/index incoming mail.
• Initiate motor valuations, adhere to credit control and authority matrix.
• Follow up renewals, process refunds and maximise cross‑sell and up‑sell opportunities.
• Maintain AML and KYC compliance, identify and escalate potential breaches.
• Perform any other duties as required by management.

Required profile

• Degree preferably in insurance or a related field.
• Minimum of 1 year underwriting or insurance experience.
• Knowledge of anti‑money laundering (AML) and know‑your‑customer (KYC) requirements.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established procedures.
