Deputy Director

About the role

The Deputy Director provides strategic advice to the Division Director on technical, operational and functional matters, strengthening UNEP’s impact. This senior position oversees programmatic and administrative functions, ensuring high‑quality outputs and effective resource management.

Key responsibilities

• Advise the Director on technical, operational and functional issues to improve division effectiveness.
• Support budget preparation, reporting, financial and resource management, and donor relations.
• Lead workforce planning, staff mentorship, and corporate‑wide training initiatives.
• Provide secretariat services to the Budget Steering Committee and review UNEP’s Supplementary Financial Rules.
• Represent UNEP in inter‑agency budget and finance networks and propose tailored solutions.
• Organise meetings, seminars and strategic forums; ensure high‑quality, evidence‑based division outputs.
• Oversee quality assurance of supervised sections and refine processes for priority setting and resource allocation.
• Prepare and coordinate reports for intergovernmental bodies such as CPR, UNEA, ACABQ, CPC, ECOSOC and the UN General Assembly.
• Lead data collection and analysis to support evidence‑based planning and performance management.

Required profile

• Minimum 15 years of progressively responsible experience in financial management, administration, budget management and internal control.
• At least 10 years of leadership experience managing implementing partners, multi‑stakeholder trust funds and financial reviews.
• Proven ability to mentor staff, drive collaboration and maintain strong internal controls.
• Experience working within United Nations or similar international organisations is highly desirable.
