Finance and Budget Assistant

About the role

The Finance and Budget Assistant will support the Finance and Budget Officer within UNEP's Ecosystems Division, based in Nairobi. This role contributes to the preparation, monitoring and reporting of the division’s medium‑term budget and financial performance.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in reviewing, analysing and preparing the medium‑term plan and its revisions.
• Prepare narrative and tabular documents for cost estimates and budget proposals covering staff and non‑staff requirements.
• Support managers in developing resource requirements for budget submissions.
• Research and provide input for budget reviews of intergovernmental and expert bodies.
• Monitor expenditures against approved budgets, prepare adjustments and verify requisitions for correct charging and fund availability.
• Prepare budget performance submissions, analyse variances and maintain the integrity of financial databases.
• Coordinate with other finance and budget staff during budget report preparation and ensure proper filing and archiving.
• Draft correspondence on financial and budget matters, maintain up‑to‑date files and provide guidance or training to general service staff as needed.
• Collect, analyse and present data for information sharing, knowledge management and decision‑making, including visualisations and updates to web pages or brochures.

Required profile

• Works under the overall guidance of the Finance and Budget Officer.
• Demonstrates attention to detail in financial data verification and reporting.
• Capable of providing guidance and daily supervision to other general service staff when required.
