Medical Officer – Primary & Secondary Care

About the role

The Kenya Red Cross Society seeks a qualified Medical Officer to deliver comprehensive primary and secondary health services to individuals, families and the wider community. Reporting to the Health Service Coordinator, the role is based in Nairobi and involves direct patient care, clinical supervision and collaboration with public health initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Provide urgent medical care, including resuscitation, stabilization, assessment, diagnosis and referral.
• Conduct history taking, physical examinations and investigations to determine urgency and severity of presenting problems.
• Prescribe medication, perform minor surgical procedures and deliver general practice interventions.
• Offer counselling, psychological support, health education and preventive screening.
• Supervise daily clinical management with nursing teams and conduct post‑operative follow‑up.
• Lead ward rounds, inpatient reviews and specialised outpatient clinics (SOPC, GOPC, HRC, POPC, MOPC).
• Collaborate with public health providers on communicable disease control and chronic disease management.
• Ensure compliance with health and safety policies, drug storage and sharps disposal.

Required profile

• Registered medical practitioner with a valid medical licence in Kenya.
• Qualified as a General Practitioner with experience in primary and secondary care.
• Ability to deliver culturally appropriate, patient‑centred care to diverse populations.
• Strong clinical judgment and capability to manage urgent and complex cases.
