Senior Backend Engineer (AI-Native) – Remote

About the role

Umba is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer who will work in an AI‑native development environment to design, build, and scale the core services behind its digital banking, lending, and payments products. The role is fully remote and blends traditional backend engineering with AI‑assisted development workflows.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high‑performance Python APIs using Flask and FastAPI.
• Contribute to front‑end features with Next.js and assist across the stack when needed.
• Define clear technical specifications that can be executed by AI‑assisted tools.
• Leverage AI tools such as Claude Code and Codex to accelerate coding while ensuring security and performance.
• Review, test, and harden AI‑generated code, building robust validation pipelines.
• Architect systems for reliability, observability, and scalability.
• Collaborate with Data and Product teams to deliver end‑to‑end features.
• Debug complex production incidents and implement lasting fixes.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong background in Python backend development.
• Comfortable working in a fast‑paced, remote, high‑impact team.
• Experience with AI‑assisted development workflows is a plus.
