About the role
The Head of Department for Languages will lead the Languages faculty of a Christian, values‑driven school in Lavington, Nairobi, delivering the Cambridge Curriculum across all key stages. The role blends academic leadership, classroom teaching and pastoral duties as a class teacher.
Key responsibilities
- Lead planning, delivery and evaluation of the Languages curriculum (English, Kiswahili, French) and oversee Cambridge Global Perspectives across KS1‑KS3.
- Ensure alignment with Cambridge Assessment International Education standards and develop schemes of work, lesson plans and assessment strategies.
- Monitor teaching quality through observations, book reviews and feedback; mentor and manage language teachers.
- Teach English Literature and Global Perspectives, delivering differentiated lessons and preparing students for internal and external assessments.
- Serve as a Key Stage 3 class teacher, overseeing academic progress, behaviour and wellbeing of an assigned class.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, performance and development; communicate regularly with parents.
- Develop and review curriculum resources, implement assessment frameworks and analyse performance data to inform interventions.
- Ensure compliance with safeguarding policies and promote an inclusive, supportive classroom environment.
Required profile
- Proven experience in leading a language department or similar academic team.
- Strong knowledge of the Cambridge Curriculum and Global Perspectives framework.
- Ability to design schemes of work, lesson plans and assessment strategies for KS1‑KS3.
- Experience in mentoring teachers, conducting performance management and delivering professional development.
- Demonstrated classroom teaching expertise in English Literature and Global Perspectives.
- Effective pastoral skills, including class‑teacher responsibilities and student welfare support.
