Information Technology Intern – IT Security

About the role

The United Nations Office at Nairobi is seeking a motivated Information Technology Intern to support its Information Security team. This 3‑6 month placement offers hands‑on experience in cyber security operations within a global UN environment.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor security dashboards (SIEM, EDR, firewalls) and assist in initial triage of alerts.
• Analyze phishing emails and suspicious files using sandbox environments.
• Conduct vulnerability scans and help track security patches across the enterprise.
• Support security configuration audits and user access reviews.
• Assist in creating and delivering security awareness materials and coordinating phishing simulations.
• Help configure and securely deploy Wi‑Fi access points and update network schematics.
• Participate in secure de‑commissioning of ICT equipment, ensuring proper data destruction.

Required profile

• Completed undergraduate studies in Information Technology or a related field (or final year student).
• Strong interest in cyber security and willingness to learn under supervision.
• Good analytical and communication skills, with ability to work in a multicultural team.

Required skills

• Familiarity with SIEM, EDR and firewall technologies.
• Experience with vulnerability scanning tools.
• Basic knowledge of sandbox analysis for malware.
• Understanding of Wi‑Fi security configurations and network diagramming.
