Pig Extension Officer

About the role

The Pig Extension Officer will provide technical support to pig farmers, ensuring a reliable and cost‑efficient supply of pigs for Farmer’s Choice. The role involves on‑site work in Nairobi and regular field visits across the region.

Key responsibilities

• Track farmer KPIs such as birth rates, mortality, average daily gains, and slaughter weights; segment farmers and implement targeted interventions.
• Conduct farm audits, performance reviews and produce regular reports, including a farmer performance dashboard and supply forecasts.
• Design and deliver capacity‑building programs on nutrition, biosecurity, breeding, housing and animal welfare.
• Manage contract farmers, build long‑term partnerships, resolve grievances and ensure high engagement.
• Monitor compliance with Farmer’s Choice standards on disease control, feeding, waste management and animal welfare.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, Veterinary Science or related field.
• 3–5 years’ experience in pig production, farmer extension or livestock value‑chain development.
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and data‑driven mindset.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with ability to build farmer relationships.

Required skills

• Knowledge of pig production systems, nutrition, biosecurity and animal welfare.
• Proficiency in MS Office and data management tools.
• Data analysis, reporting and project management capabilities.
