Civil and Structural Engineering Intern – Field Operations

About the role

Synnefa is looking for a recent civil engineering graduate to join its hardware team for a six‑month internship. You will support the design, installation, and quality control of foundations, drainage, anchorage, and access works for Smart Solar Dryers and greenhouse projects across Kenya.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain engineering drawings for standard product ranges under version control.
• Create civil site‑preparation packages including foundation slabs, drainage layouts, anchor bolt plans, access roads and loading aprons.
• Detail frames, drying beds, racks and tensile structures; produce reinforcement detailing and bar‑bending schedules.
• Carry out site setting‑out, level checks and foundation inspections; assess ground conditions and coordinate geotechnical inputs.
• Generate accurate quantity take‑offs and bills of quantities from approved designs.
• Inspect sites against quality‑control checklists, record defects and verify delivered materials.
• Prepare as‑built documentation and close‑out packages for each deployment.
• Submit weekly written site reports.

Required profile

• Recent BSc in Civil Engineering (graduated within the last two years); transcripts accepted for pending conferment.
• Ability to work on‑site in locations such as Kericho, Nyandarua, Makueni and Kisumu.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD.
• Experience with Civil 3D or Revit.
• Familiarity with structural analysis software.
• Knowledge of reinforcement detailing and bar‑bending schedules.
• Ability to produce quantity take‑offs and bills of quantities.
