Clerk of Works – Construction Supervision

About the role

The Clerk of Works will oversee the construction of a warehousing facility and office block for the Mission for Essential Drugs and Supplies (MEDS) in Kisumu County. Reporting to the CEO, the role ensures that all works comply with approved designs, quality standards, and regulatory requirements for handling health products.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and monitor construction activities to ensure compliance with drawings, specifications and quality standards.
• Inspect and verify delivered materials for conformity with specifications.
• Maintain detailed site records, including daily diaries, defect registers and instruction books.
• Act as liaison between architects, project managers, consultants, contractors and senior management.
• Report deviations, defects and non‑conformities and follow up on corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with statutory regulations such as GMP, GSP and GDP, as well as health and safety requirements.
• Identify potential problems, advise on technical issues and support timely, budget‑conscious delivery.
• Prepare and submit progress reports on work progress, quality and site conditions.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, construction management or a related field.
• Professional certification or membership with a relevant body (e.g., Institute of Clerk of Works, Engineers Board of Kenya).
• Minimum five years’ experience supervising large‑scale construction projects.
• Strong knowledge of building codes, statutory and regulatory requirements for pharma‑grade warehouses.
• Familiarity with health, safety and environmental standards on construction sites.
• High integrity, strong communication skills and ability to work independently or within a multidisciplinary team.

Required skills

• Interpretation of construction drawings, specifications and Bills of Quantities.
• Record keeping and report writing.
• Use of MS Office applications.
• Project management software such as MS Project or Primavera.
• Supervision of construction projects for pharma‑grade facilities.
