Clerk of Works

About the role

Strathmore University is hiring a full-time, on-site Clerk of Works in Nairobi to supervise construction works, monitor contractors and inspect materials. The post holder ensures that works follow approved drawings, specifications and contract requirements, and keeps the Architect and Project Manager informed of progress, risks and issues. The role covers the KOB STEM Complex and other university campus projects as directed by the Project Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor, coordinate and liaise with the Architect and civil, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers, and resolve problems before they materialize
• Check that contractors understand instructions and drawings, and flag variances to the Architect immediately
• Maintain accurate records, endorse the contractor's site diary daily, keep a personal diary of progress, labour, plant, materials, weather and stoppages, and attend progress and coordination meetings
• Verify contractor time sheets, pay sheets and day work sheets, and prepare weekly and monthly schedules of works for the Architect's approval
• Inspect rejected works, monitor quality of materials and workmanship, supervise tests and check quality assurance against the approved manual
• Monitor the contractor's health and safety procedures and notify the Architect of hazards
• Carry out snagging systematically, file snag lists and coordinate the main contractor and subcontractors, including weekly coordination meetings
• Support contract administration by tracking variations, change orders, claims, requests for information and non-conformance records, and maintain a risks and incidents register
• Ensure compliance with the Environmental Management Plan and NEMA requirements

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in construction management or equivalent
• Registered with the relevant professional body
• 4 years' experience in construction management or equivalent
