Director – Legal & Governance

About the role

The Director provides strategic leadership for a designated directorate within the Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice. This full‑time, on‑site position in Nairobi is responsible for setting priorities, guiding policy implementation, and ensuring compliance with constitutional and legal mandates.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise senior staff and coordinate legal and administrative functions.
• Review reports, legal briefs, and advise on complex legal and operational issues.
• Manage budgets, resources and procurement processes.
• Oversee performance monitoring, compliance and evidence‑based decision making.
• Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to advance justice and governance objectives.
• Represent the Office in high‑level meetings, forums and institutional reform initiatives.
• Promote ethical standards, professional development and a culture of integrity.

Required profile

• Demonstrated leadership and management experience in a legal, public‑sector or justice‑related institution.
• Strong expertise in public law, governance and the ability to interpret legislation, policy and constitutional provisions.
• Proven stakeholder‑engagement, negotiation and collaboration skills across government agencies, development partners or civil society.
• High ethical standards, integrity and a commitment to the rule of law.
• Solid organizational, analytical and evidence‑based decision‑making abilities.
• Advanced academic qualification in Law, Public Policy, Public Administration or a related field; admission to practice law and relevant professional certifications are an advantage.
• Experience working within Kenyan government institutions and familiarity with the Kenyan legal and governance framework.
