Independent Director, Growth and Value Creation
Deloitte East Africa · Nairobi
Job description
About the role
A publicly listed Kenyan enterprise in the energy, resources and industrials sector is seeking an Independent Non-Executive Director through Deloitte East Africa. This is a full Board appointment, not a purely technical role: the Director contributes to wider Board discussions on strategy, performance, risk and governance alongside their specialist expertise. Selection takes account of the approved role requirements, the Board's committee needs and independence criteria.
Key responsibilities
- Take an active part in the Board's oversight of strategy, performance, risk and governance.
- Exercise independent judgement and avoid relationships or interests that could compromise objectivity.
- Contribute across the Board agenda, question and challenge management constructively, and support high standards of governance, accountability, disclosure and confidentiality.
- Help the Board test the corporate strategy, examine major investments and track whether they deliver lasting shareholder value.
- Bring a clear commercial view to opportunities, portfolio choices, partnerships and diversification.
- Disclose directorships, interests, shareholdings and conflicts of interest, and have enough time to prepare and attend meetings.
Required profile
- Meets all statutory eligibility, independence, integrity, competence, time commitment and fitness to serve requirements for a listed issuer.
- Independent of the organisation, its management and significant shareholders, with no unresolved conflict.
- Degree in business, economics, engineering, finance or a related field; an MBA or other postgraduate qualification is an advantage.
- Substantial senior executive or Board-level experience in commercial strategy, corporate strategy, investment, business development or general management within a large, complex organisation.
- Demonstrable record of delivering measurable growth or transformation through market entry, diversification, strategic partnerships, transactions or new revenue streams.
- Clear communication, sound judgement and collaborative approach; brings diverse experience and perspectives.
Advantages: experience in a regulated or capital-intensive organisation, M&A, joint ventures or project financing, and previous Board or committee service. Applications close on 17 November 2026 via the online recruitment platform, with the prescribed form, declarations, CV and proof of qualifications; shortlisted candidates face competency-based interviews and due diligence.
