Lead Hand Process Operator

About the role

The Lead Hand Process Operator reports to the Shift Supervisor and ensures that their circuits are run according to specified key input variables while keeping a safe working environment. The role covers a variety of metallurgical unit operations and ancillary equipment, and includes the added responsibilities of leading plant operations and supervising Process Operators when the Shift Supervisor is not on site. The operator must also be able to take on Lead Hand duties when the supervisor is absent. The position involves night shifts and requires physical ability to move around, use testing equipment and operate mobile equipment such as forklifts and scissor lifts.

Key responsibilities

• Act as a safety leader and follow safety, environmental, quality and hygiene rules
• Identify hazards, correct them immediately and report them to supervisors
• Operate the assigned circuit, including flow rate calculations, equipment start-up and shut-down, and handling and mixing of reagents
• Monitor process parameters, respond to alarms and adjust the circuit to optimize performance
• Maintain sample and testing documentation such as Chain of Custody and Certificate of Analysis
• Carry out general housekeeping and minor maintenance
• Report end-of-day process changes and issues to Shift Supervisors and senior management
• Supervise Process Operators and lead plant operations in the absence of the Shift Supervisor

Required profile

• Minimum high school diploma, or a technical school diploma in a relevant field, or a co-op engineering program
• Previous plant experience in an operation role or in a testing environment is an asset
• Ability to multi-task, work well under pressure and as part of a team
• Verbal and written communication skills, with neat and accurate records and logs
• Flexibility to work shifts, including night shifts
• First-aid training is provided; prior supervisory experience is an asset
