About the role
The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in partnership with the Midwives Association of Kenya (MAK), is seeking an individual consultant to lead the development of a National Midwifery Competency Framework. This role supports Kenya’s effort to harmonise midwifery training, regulation and practice with international standards.
Key responsibilities
- Work under the supervision of the SRHR & Health Systems Specialist and overall guidance of the SRHR/Youth Advisor and Deputy Representative.
- Collaborate with MAK to gather and analyse evidence on current midwifery education, training, regulation and clinical practice in Kenya.
- Draft a competency framework that aligns with International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and World Health Organization (WHO) standards while reflecting national legislative and institutional requirements.
- Facilitate stakeholder consultations, including technical working groups, to validate and refine the framework.
- Prepare and submit deliverables for UNFPA review, ensuring technical quality and adherence to timelines.
Required profile
- Advanced degree in Midwifery, Public Health, Health Systems, or a related field.
- Proven experience developing competency frameworks or similar policy documents in the health sector.
- Familiarity with ICM and WHO midwifery standards and Kenyan health regulations.
- Strong analytical and report‑writing abilities.
- Ability to work collaboratively with UN agencies, professional associations and government stakeholders.
