Professor - General Surgery

About the role

Kenyatta University is looking for a Professor of General Surgery to lead teaching, research and clinical supervision within its Faculty of Medicine. The role combines academic leadership with active involvement in postgraduate training and scholarly activities.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver undergraduate and postgraduate courses in General Surgery and related subjects.
• Supervise at least five postgraduate and two doctoral candidates to successful completion.
• Conduct and publish original research, with a minimum of seven peer‑reviewed articles, five of which must be published after appointment as Associate Professor.
• Develop and submit research grant proposals individually or as part of a team.
• Participate in national and international conferences, seminars and workshops, contributing to the university’s academic reputation.
• Maintain active registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) and a valid practicing license.

Required profile

• Earned PhD (or equivalent) in Medicine or Public Health from an accredited university.
• Master’s degree (or equivalent) with specialization in Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Urology, Plastic Surgery or Paediatrics.
• Minimum three years of university teaching experience at the Associate Professor level.
• Successful supervision of at least five postgraduate and two doctoral students since appointment as Associate Professor.
• At least seven peer‑reviewed publications, with five published after appointment.
• Demonstrated experience in securing research funding.
• Active participation in academic conferences, seminars and workshops.
• Current registration with KMPDC and a valid medical practicing license.
