Programme Management Officer

About the role

The Programme Management Officer will support UNEP's Ecosystems Division in delivering biodiversity and land‑related initiatives. Based in Nairobi, the role works within the Nature Frameworks Support Unit to coordinate projects, engage partners and ensure alignment with UN environmental agreements.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate Global Environment Facility (GEF) biodiversity enabling activities, including NBSAP updates and national reporting to UNCBD and UNCCD.
• Facilitate UNEP projects funded by the Kunming Biodiversity Fund, ensuring compliance with UNEP rules and the Medium‑Term Strategy.
• Provide technical and analytical support for United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolutions under the Nature Frameworks Support Unit.
• Monitor programme development, identify operational issues, propose solutions and support follow‑up actions for multilateral environmental agreements.
• Manage and supervise staff involved in these activities.
• Prepare and facilitate technical workshops and consultations with Member States and partners.
• Contribute to inter‑agency coordination processes and working groups.
• Participate in field missions, coordinating consultants and preparing mission outputs.
• Support budget and project management, including work programmes, progress reports and financial documentation.
• Prepare briefings, speeches and technical inputs for senior management on relevant agreements.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in biodiversity conservation, environmental science, sustainable development or related field.
• Minimum seven years of progressive experience in project or programme management in biodiversity conservation, preferably in an international context.
• Experience coordinating diverse teams and working with regional or multilateral environmental agreements.
• Demonstrated knowledge of GEF processes and at least two years of experience in data analytics.
• Fluency in English (UN Level III); French is an asset.
