About the role

The Programme Policy Officer will lead the design, implementation and oversight of environmental and social safeguards for WFP programmes in Kenya. You will ensure compliance with IFC Performance Standards, the World Bank ESG Framework and UNDRIP while supporting sustainable development outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide technical oversight and quality assurance for SEPS, IPEPs, ESMPs, ESIAs and related safeguards instruments.
  • Identify gaps against IFC PS5, PS6, PS7 and UNDRIP requirements and recommend corrective actions.
  • Lead the preparation of Grievance Redress Mechanisms and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) processes.
  • Coordinate with Development Finance Institutions (IFC, MIGA, World Bank) during E&S due‑diligence reviews.
  • Supervise, mentor and performance‑manage field‑based teams delivering safeguards activities.

Required profile

  • Advanced university degree in environmental science, natural resource management, anthropology, development studies, public policy or related field (or first‑level degree with relevant experience).
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in environmental and social safeguards, including application of IFC Performance Standards and World Bank ESG Framework.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing ESMPs, ESIAs, SEP/IPEPs and grievance mechanisms.
  • Experience assessing and mitigating GBVH/PSEA risk and engaging Indigenous Peoples.
  • Registration as an EIA Lead/Associate Expert with Kenya’s NEMA is an advantage.
