Cardiac Sonographer

About the role

Tenwek Hospital is seeking a qualified Cardiac Sonographer to join its cardiac imaging team. The role involves performing echocardiographic examinations, supporting patient care, and maintaining equipment in a busy teaching hospital.

Key responsibilities

• Review patient records, obtain clinical information and verify requisitions before each exam.
• Perform cardiac echo studies, explain procedures to patients and families, and provide basic emergency support when needed.
• Communicate findings promptly to physicians and highlight abnormal results.
• Request maintenance for echocardiography and electrogram machines and ensure the exam area remains clean and well‑stocked.
• Train and mentor junior staff in basic echocardiography techniques.
• Safeguard patient confidentiality and adhere to hospital ethics and compliance policies.

Required profile

• Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery, Medical Imaging (Radiology) or related field from a recognized institution.
• Preceptorship, Certificate or Higher Diploma in Cardiac Sonography.
• BLS certification; ACLS preferred.
• Registration with the Clinical Officers Council of Kenya or Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority (for radiologists).
• Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in cardiac echo and other diagnostic imaging.

Required skills

• Cardiac echocardiography and ultrasound operation.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) knowledge.
• Proficiency with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
• Equipment maintenance and troubleshooting for echocardiography machines.
