About the role

The Chief of Section, Programme Management leads the IED Threat Mitigation Advisory Team within UNMAS, providing strategic direction and policy guidance on improvised explosive device and explosive ordnance threats. Based in Nairobi, the role reports to the UNMAS Director in New York and works closely with the Office of Military Affairs.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and oversee implementation of IED and explosive ordnance mitigation strategies, ensuring alignment with UN policies and international standards.
• Lead advisory, training and capacity‑development activities, guaranteeing timely delivery and quality assurance.
• Manage the Section’s work programme, coordinate internal reviews and supervise staff.
• Engage Member State representatives to build partnerships and ensure effective technical support.
• Interact with donors to secure funding, monitor expenditures and produce accurate financial reports.
• Prepare position papers and reports for intergovernmental bodies such as the General Assembly and ACBJQ.
• Contribute to bi‑annual and annual reporting on budget and programme performance.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in programme management and policy guidance on IED or explosive ordnance threats.
• Proven ability to lead multi‑disciplinary teams and coordinate with UN agencies, Member States and donors.
• Strong understanding of UN legislative mandates, international standards and donor reporting requirements.
