Chief Technology Officer

About the role

We are seeking a Chief Technology Officer to lead the engineering, data, security and enterprise technology functions at GiveDirectly, building systems that securely move billions of dollars to vulnerable people worldwide.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a growing engineering team (currently ~15, expected to double) and oversee engineering, data, security, and enterprise technology.
• Maintain and improve legacy technology stack while building new systems for scale.
• Design and evaluate architecture, make build‑vs‑buy decisions, and ensure high‑quality, high‑velocity software delivery.
• Partner with the CEO and VP of Product to align technology strategy with business goals.
• Drive AI‑first initiatives, setting tools, culture, goals and guardrails for responsible AI use.

Required profile

• Proven track record hiring, developing and retaining top engineering talent.
• Strong technical judgment and ability to evaluate designs without being the primary implementer.
• Business acumen and decisiveness in ambiguous, high‑stakes environments.
• Low‑ego, hands‑on problem‑solving attitude.
• Commitment to embodying and promoting GiveDirectly’s values.

Required skills

• Experience with identity and fraud management systems.
• Machine learning on large, imperfect datasets (e.g., cell‑phone data, satellite imagery).
• Mobile money integration and low‑connectivity environments.
• Software architecture, design, and evaluation.
• AI/ML tooling and implementation at scale.
