Communications Specialist – Land Border Programme

About the role

Mercy Corps is seeking a Communications Specialist to support the newly funded East Africa Land Border Programme in Kenya. The role will focus on developing and delivering advocacy and communications activities that help prevent, protect and pursue human traffickers and smugglers exploiting vulnerable migrants.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a communications strategy aligned with programme objectives.
• Produce high‑quality content for print, digital and social media channels, including stories, briefs, newsletters and press releases.
• Manage media relations, monitor coverage and respond to emerging issues.
• Support advocacy efforts by preparing briefing notes, policy briefs and stakeholder messaging.
• Coordinate with programme partners, government agencies and community groups to ensure consistent messaging.
• Track and report on communications metrics to demonstrate impact.

Required profile

• University degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field.
• Proven experience in communications or advocacy within humanitarian, development or NGO contexts.
• Strong understanding of migration, irregular movement and human trafficking issues in East Africa.
• Excellent written and verbal English skills; ability to adapt messages for diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment.
