Controller – Beverage Distribution

About the role

We are a leading beverage distribution company in New Jersey seeking an experienced Controller to lead all accounting and financial operations. This hands‑on role will ensure accurate reporting, robust internal controls, and effective cash‑flow management in a fast‑paced distribution environment.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee all accounting functions including general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, inventory, and payroll.
• Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and manage month‑end and year‑end close processes.
• Coordinate with external CPA firm for tax filings and year‑end review.
• Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and develop cash‑flow forecasts.
• Manage accounts receivable, collections, and vendor payments while optimizing payment terms.
• Oversee inventory accounting, ensure accurate valuation and costing, and report on variances and shrinkage.
• Partner with operations to improve inventory controls and processes.
• Develop margin reporting by SKU, customer, and channel; analyze profitability of key accounts.
• Support pricing and cost decisions with data‑driven analysis and prepare management dashboards.
• Ensure compliance with state and local regulations, including New York container‑deposit laws and sales‑tax filings.
• Maintain strong internal controls and support audit processes.
• Optimize use of Sage 100 ERP, identify process improvements, and leverage automation and AI tools to reduce manual work.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 + years experience as a Controller or equivalent in a small to mid‑size business.
• Strong background in distribution, beverage, or consumer‑goods industry.
• Hands‑on experience with inventory and cost accounting.
• Proven ability to manage accounts receivable, collections, and cash flow.
• Knowledge of New York State container‑deposit accounting and reporting.
• Deep understanding of GAAP and financial reporting.
• Experience with ERP systems, preferably Sage 100.
• Preferred CPA or public‑accounting (audit) background.
• Experience in family‑owned or entrepreneurial environments.
• Track record of implementing system improvements or automation.
• Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
