Data Journalist (Digital, Video & Audio)

About the role

BBC News Africa is looking for a Data Journalist based in Nairobi to create data‑driven stories for digital, video and audio platforms. You will turn complex data into clear, impartial journalism that reaches audiences worldwide, working under tight deadlines and collaborating with teams across Africa and the UK.

Key responsibilities

• Produce data‑focused news stories, live coverage, visual pieces and special projects for digital audiences.
• Research, write, edit and publish content across digital, video and audio channels, maintaining high editorial standards.
• Apply strong editorial judgement to ensure accuracy, impartiality and relevance of news coverage.
• Adapt content for different platforms and audiences using innovative formats and audience insights.
• Collaborate with BBC News colleagues, share content, support cross‑team projects and promote best practices.
• Lead or contribute to major editorial projects and breaking news, managing priorities and tight deadlines.
• Support programme production and presentation activities while complying with BBC health, safety and editorial guidelines.

Required profile

• Proven experience in journalism with a portfolio of digital, multimedia, data and visual stories.
• Excellent research, data analysis and storytelling abilities, capable of simplifying complex information.
• Strong editorial judgement and understanding of news values, audience needs and the BBC’s impartiality standards.
• Effective communication and collaboration skills, able to build relationships across teams.

Required skills

• Proficiency with digital tools and technologies for gathering, producing and publishing content across broadcast, digital and social platforms.
