Director, Software Engineering

About the role

The Director of Software Engineering leads the strategy, operation, and growth of Ezra’s engineering organisation in Nairobi. Reporting to the CTO, this senior leader shapes the technical vision, drives cross‑team programmes, and ensures delivery of robust, scalable, and secure solutions that support the company’s rapid expansion.

Key responsibilities

• Build, lead, and mentor a high‑performing team of engineering managers, senior engineers, and technical leads.
• Foster an inclusive culture of ownership, high performance, and continuous career development.
• Define and communicate the technical vision, aligning it with the broader technology strategy.
• Oversee execution of multi‑team roadmaps, ensuring consistency, quality, and delivery velocity.
• Partner with the CTO, product, and operations leaders to translate business objectives into actionable technical plans.
• Standardise technology stacks, architectural patterns, and development methodologies across teams.
• Establish organisational standards for system reliability, security, and performance.
• Identify delivery bottlenecks and implement process improvements to boost engineering efficiency.
• Champion security‑by‑design and ensure compliance with security and governance standards.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience managing large software engineering organisations.
• Track record of building high‑performing, inclusive teams and driving talent growth and retention.
• Strong ability to set technical direction, reduce technical debt, and deliver complex cross‑functional programmes.
• Excellent collaboration skills with product, operations, and executive stakeholders.
