Environmental History Scientist

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) seeks an experienced Environmental History Scientist to lead and support research on forest governance and natural resource management. The role involves providing scientific guidance, supervising publications, and building capacity within multidisciplinary teams.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts and methods meet the highest standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators to define and implement emerging research activities.
• Write, supervise, and disseminate scientific publications and communications.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists and students.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional, and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholders and donors.
• Identify and secure additional research funding.
• Plan, monitor, and report on research activities, including financial aspects.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental history, natural resource management, social sciences).
• Proven experience in collaborative natural resource management or social‑science research.
• Strong record of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated success in resource mobilization, proposal development, and obtaining donor funding.
• Experience managing budgets across multiple projects.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Experience working with multiple partners and in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams.
