Legal Counsel

About the role

Reporting to the CEO of the Beginnings Fund, the Legal Counsel will provide senior‑level legal guidance and risk management to protect and advance the fund’s mission. The role is central to structuring financial investments, ensuring compliance across grants, investments, and partnerships.

Key responsibilities

• Review grant and investment proposals, conduct corporate and legal due diligence, and assess legal risks.
• Review and approve grant award letters and other legal agreements with grantees or investees.
• Provide legal input on structuring both grant and non‑grant investments for the Fund and affiliated entities.
• Advise on governance matters for the Fund and any affiliated entities.
• Manage relationships with outside counsel.
• Draft, review, and negotiate contracts such as consultant agreements, memorandums of understanding, and vendor contracts.
• Support the development of internal policies and perform other duties as assigned.

Required profile

• LLB or J.D. degree (or equivalent) with at least four years of experience, including two post‑bar years.
• Experience in a major law firm or in‑house corporate setting, with interest in philanthropy or international development.
• Outstanding contract drafting, review, and negotiation skills.
• Strong analytical ability to explain complex legal concepts to non‑lawyers.
• Impeccable integrity, excellent judgment, and ability to work independently.
• Willingness to travel 30‑50% and thrive in a startup environment.
