Legal Officer (P3)

About the role

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is seeking a Legal Officer at the P3 level to join its Law Division, Environmental Governance section in Nairobi. The incumbent will support UNEP’s mission to promote environmental rule of law and sustainable development through legal expertise.

Key responsibilities

• Provide technical assistance and capacity‑building services to governments and partners on environmental law and governance.
• Deliver advisory services, thought leadership and collective intelligence on the implementation of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs).
• Support the Montevideo Programme V as secretariat, contributing to its ten‑year intergovernmental agenda.
• Collaborate with UNEP divisions and regional offices to advance legal aspects of sustainability and circularity programmes, including textile value chains.
• Report to the Deputy Director and work under the direct supervision of the Head of Section.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in law, preferably with specialization in environmental law.
• Relevant professional experience in international or national environmental law, policy development, or related legal advisory roles.
• Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and engage with UN bodies and member states.

Required skills

• Knowledge of Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) and their implementation mechanisms.
