Postdoctoral Fellow – Environmental History

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Environmental History to contribute to cutting‑edge research on forest governance and natural resource management. This full‑time position is based in Nairobi, Westlands, and offers the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary, multicultural team.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance ensuring research concepts and methods meet the highest standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators to define and implement research activities in emerging interest areas.
• Write, supervise, and disseminate scientific publications and communications.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists, students, and staff.
• Represent CIFOR in national, regional, and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain constructive partnerships with stakeholders.
• Identify and secure additional funding for relevant research topics.
• Plan, monitor, and report on research activities, including financial aspects.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., environmental history, natural resource management, social sciences).
• Experience in collaborative natural resource management or social‑science research.
• Strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
• Demonstrated success in resource mobilisation, proposal development, and fundraising.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Proven ability to work with multiple partners and conduct fieldwork in developing countries.
• Experience in multicultural, multidisciplinary research teams.
