Regional Safety & Security Director

About the role

The Regional Safety & Security Director will lead the protection of staff, volunteers and partners across the Africa and Europe regions for The Nature Conservancy. Based in Nairobi, the role combines strategic planning, emergency management and hands‑on incident response in a hybrid work setting.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, maintain and update emergency management plans and safety/security protocols for all country programmes.
• Provide technical guidance, training and drills to regional teams, and support the formation of safety committees.
• Ensure compliance with national workplace health and safety legislation and TNC’s global policies.
• Investigate safety and security incidents, conduct root‑cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
• Maintain a regional safety portal on CONNECT, delivering up‑to‑date guidance on field safety, travel risk, medical evacuation and critical incident response.

Required profile

• BA/BS degree and at least 7 years experience in safety, security or emergency management, preferably in Africa and Europe.
• Proven experience conducting safety audits, reviews and investigations in an international NGO environment.
• Strong knowledge of safety legislation, codes of practice and best‑practice standards.
• Excellent written and spoken English communication skills.

Required skills

• Use of the Safety Incident Reporting Tool (SIRT) for hazard and incident management.
• First Aid and Remote First Aid training.
• Operation and maintenance of small boats, including high‑level boating certifications.
• Dive and boat training curriculum design.
