Senior Accountant (Grade 13) – Full Time

About the role

The Senior Accountant will lead financial reporting and budget control functions for Maseno University. The role requires a strong academic background in accounting or finance, CPA (K) registration, and extensive experience in a university or comparable environment.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and track university debts to maintain optimal debt levels.
• Design, monitor, and review internal control systems for efficient document management.
• Oversee all financial operations to ensure compliance with accounting standards and university policies.
• Coordinate with external stakeholders such as the Higher Education Loans Board, banks, and debtors to foster strong financial relationships.
• Supervise accountants, assistant accountants, accounts assistants, and clerks, ensuring timely and accurate task completion.
• Conduct annual staff evaluations to identify training needs and reward performance.
• Review and sign off monthly bank reconciliations for accuracy and consistency.
• Compile and review monthly financial statements for senior management.
• Oversee payroll reconciliations and authorize payments to ensure completeness.
• Participate in budget preparation, implementation, and monitoring.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Commerce, Accounting, Finance or equivalent from an accredited university (or a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience).
• At least 12 years of relevant cumulative work experience, with a minimum of 5 years at an accountant level in a university or comparable organization.
• Certified Public Accountant (K) or equivalent, in good standing and registered with a relevant professional body.
• Proficiency in relevant computer applications.
