Soil Science Scientist

About the role

The World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF) seeks a highly qualified Soil Science Scientist to lead and support research initiatives that advance sustainable natural resource management across Africa and beyond. The role combines scientific rigor with project leadership, ensuring that research outputs meet the highest standards and contribute to policy and practice.

Key responsibilities

• Provide scientific guidance on research concepts, methods, and standards.
• Collaborate with theme coordinators to design and implement emerging research activities.
• Write, supervise, and disseminate peer‑reviewed publications and scientific communications.
• Lead capacity‑building initiatives and mentor junior scientists and students.
• Represent ICRAF in national, regional, and global forums on forest governance.
• Develop and maintain partnerships with stakeholders and donors.
• Identify and secure additional research funding.
• Plan, monitor, and report on research activities, including financial management.

Required profile

• PhD in soil science or a closely related discipline.
• Proven experience in collaborative natural‑resource management or social‑science research.
• Strong record of peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated success in resource mobilization, proposal development, and obtaining donor funding.
• Fluent spoken and written English; additional international language(s) an advantage.
• Experience working with multiple partners and multidisciplinary teams in developing‑country contexts.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
