Solar Design Engineer

About the role

We are seeking a Solar Design Engineer to lead the design and engineering of solar PV and battery storage projects for commercial and industrial clients in Kenya.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct site assessments, gathering solar irradiance, shading, structural and electrical data.
• Prepare commercial and technical proposals based on client requirements.
• Develop deployment plans, including monitoring and evaluation.
• Create detailed system layouts using CAD and simulation tools (panel arrays, inverters, mounting structures, wiring diagrams).
• Perform engineering calculations and simulations to optimize yield, sizing, losses, and ROI.
• Design battery energy storage systems and hybrid inverter configurations.
• Collaborate with sales, project management, procurement, and installation teams to produce comprehensive documentation.
• Provide technical support throughout design, installation, commissioning, and post‑project evaluation.
• Support licensing, permitting, and compliance documentation (EPRA).
• Stay updated on emerging technologies, industry trends, and regulatory changes.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Renewable Energy Engineering or related field (Master’s a plus).
• Minimum 5 years of experience in solar PV system design, preferably on commercial, industrial or utility‑scale projects.
• Strong knowledge of solar PV technology, battery storage, electrical principles and performance factors.
• Familiarity with NEC, IEEE, IEC standards, Kenyan building codes and EPRA regulations.

Required skills

• AutoCAD or equivalent CAD software.
• PVsyst, Helioscope, PVCase or PV*SOL simulation tools.
• Engineering calculations for yield, string sizing and financial analysis.
• Design of battery energy storage systems (BESS) and hybrid inverter configurations.
