Strategic Communications Manager

About the role

The Strategic Communications Manager leads Amref Health Africa’s communications in Kenya, protecting and building trust among government, partners, donors and communities. The role shapes messaging, influences advocacy, and aligns Kenya’s communications with Amref’s global strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the development and implementation of Amref Kenya’s communications strategy, aligning it with the country and global priorities.
• Advise the Country Director and senior management on positioning, stakeholder engagement and reputational risk.
• Build and maintain relationships with journalists, editors and health correspondents across national, county and community media, and act as the primary media contact.
• Oversee digital channels including the website, social media and email/WhatsApp newsletters, using analytics to grow and engage owned audiences.
• Manage crisis communications, monitor misinformation, and coordinate rapid evidence‑based responses in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
• Produce flagship communications products such as impact stories, annual report, newsletters, policy briefs and advocacy materials.
• Supervise and develop the communications team, manage the budget and external agencies.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading communications strategy in the health or development sector.
• Strong understanding of media relations, public‑sector communications and stakeholder engagement.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with ability to craft clear messages for diverse audiences.
• Demonstrated capacity to work with senior leaders and influence decision‑making.
• Experience managing digital platforms and using analytics to inform content decisions.
