Transportation Engineering Technician

About the role

Under the supervision of a Senior Transportation Surveyor, the Transportation Engineering Technician supports Caltrans’ surveying projects by preparing maps, estimates and documentation. The role combines field surveying knowledge with computer‑aided drafting to produce accurate engineering maps used for right‑of‑way acquisition and project planning.

Key responsibilities

• Perform basic surveying tasks to collect data for topographic, base, acquisition and monumentation maps.
• Create and update CAD drawings for various survey and right‑of‑way engineering products, including exhibit maps and necessity plats.
• Prepare written documents, estimates and reports that accompany survey deliverables.
• Follow current Survey/Right‑of‑Way Engineering mapping standards and guidelines.
• Collaborate with senior surveyors and project leads to ensure mapping accuracy and timely delivery.

Required profile

• Basic knowledge of land surveying principles and techniques.
• Ability to work under direction of senior staff and follow established procedures.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in map production.

Required skills

• Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) for engineering mapping.
