Underwriting Assistant

About the role

The Underwriting Assistant will analyse, assess and underwrite Group Life risks presented to the company through proposals, declarations, renewals and amendments, following approved underwriting guidelines, pricing parameters, reinsurance arrangements and delegated authority limits.

Key responsibilities

• Assess new and renewal Group Life risks based on member data, benefits, occupation, claims experience and other risk factors.
• Prepare and review quotations, applying approved rates, underwriting guidelines and delegated authority limits.
• Determine appropriate underwriting terms, including rates, loadings, exclusions, benefit limits and special conditions.
• Assess medical evidence for members exceeding the free cover limit and communicate underwriting decisions.
• Identify cases requiring reinsurance and coordinate placement or approval before accepting the risk.
• Review renewal performance and recommend pricing and terms based on claims experience and portfolio exposure.
• Review onboarding documents, KYC/AML requirements, premiums and member schedules before policy issuance.
• Provide technical guidance to clients, intermediaries, sales teams, claims and other internal stakeholders.
• Prepare and maintain renewal, creditor/debtor, compliance and performance reports on a weekly basis.
• Maintain accurate underwriting records and ensure compliance with guidelines, reinsurance arrangements, regulatory requirements and internal controls.

Required profile

• Degree in Actuarial Science, BCom Insurance, Statistics or progress in a Diploma in Insurance.
• Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience handling Group Life schemes.
• Basic knowledge of regulations issued by the Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA).
• Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
• Interest in emerging technologies such as AI and machine learning.
• Good interpersonal skills.
