Assistant Cook

About the role

The Assistant Cook works closely with the Head Chef to prepare, cook, and serve safe, nutritious meals for pupils and staff in a school environment. This hands‑on position involves food preparation, cooking, serving, and maintaining a clean kitchen, with a strong focus on hygiene and food safety.

Key responsibilities

• Assist the Head Chef in preparing, cooking, and presenting meals according to the school menu and portion guidelines.
• Perform food preparation tasks such as washing, peeling, cutting, and portioning ingredients.
• Cook and serve breakfast, lunch, and snacks, ensuring food is kept at the correct temperature.
• Maintain a clean and organised kitchen, including washing utensils, pots, and equipment.
• Follow food safety and hygiene procedures, including proper storage, labelling, and stock rotation.
• Support receiving, checking, and storing food deliveries and report any quality concerns.
• Report equipment faults, pest sightings, or maintenance issues promptly.
• Assist with special catering needs for school events, trips, or functions.
• Adhere to child protection and safeguarding policies at all times.

Required profile

• 2‑3 years of hands‑on cooking experience, preferably in a school, institutional or high‑volume kitchen.
• Certificate or diploma in food production, catering or related field is an advantage.
• Valid Certificate of Good Conduct issued within the last twelve months.
• Valid Food Handler’s Medical Certificate as required by Kenyan public health regulations.
• Strong commitment to hygiene, food safety and reliable, mature work ethic.
